The Holy Spirit is the Advocate of Jesus Christ

In John chapter fourteen (NIV), Jesus told his disciples that the Father would send the Holy Spirit after he left them (through his death, resurrection, and his ascension back to Heaven).

Jesus gave a summary about the Holy Spirit in verse twenty-six of what he does for Christians:

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

The Holy Spirit was sent to spread the truth about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.  This is further explained in John chapter sixteen and Acts chapter one verse eight.

In John chapter sixteen verses twelve through fifteen: 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

In Acts chapter one verse eight, Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit before he went back to Heaven: 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

The Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of Truth according to John chapter fourteen verses sixteen and seventeen.

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit is the Prayer Intercessor

Paul wrote in Romans chapter eight verses twenty-six and twenty-seven that the Holy Spirit reads a person’s mind and heart.  He knows how to pray about a person’s life to God without words.

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

The Holy Spirit is the Gift Distributor

Paul wrote in First Corinthians chapter twelve verses one through eleven that each person in the Christian faith was given different gifts to glorify God.  The Holy Spirit gives them to everyone who is Christian.

Starting in verse four: 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
